As with so many other plants, the medicinal effect of black nightshade can be attributed to the combined effect of several active ingredients. Black nightshade contains the most allantoin, which is otherwise a rarity in the plant world (natural allantoin is much more effective than the synthetically produced version). This compound can help cells multiply, which explains why it can accelerate the regeneration of damaged tissues. The active ingredient can improve the blood supply to the treated areas, liquefy wound fluids, and improve wound healing. Another important active ingredient is choline, which seals the walls of blood vessels, thus preventing the leakage of tissue fluid. Allantoin and choline cause the wound and inflammatory substances to be absorbed faster, which can reduce pain and swelling.
The third important active ingredient, rosmarinic acid, is anti-inflammatory, but the mucilage and tannic acids found in the plant are also important, and can have a wound-cleaning and disinfecting effect. In short, the active ingredient mixture of black evening primrose is truly an ideal remedy for wounds and injuries – this explains why it has been used in healing since time immemorial. The anti-inflammatory, analgesic and swelling-relieving effect can develop quickly – in some cases within a few minutes.
Thanks to its anti-inflammatory, wound-healing, disinfecting and regenerating components, it can be used to improve movement functions, treat various closed accidental injuries, varicose veins and skin inflammations. Thanks to its regenerating active ingredients, it can be used to treat local skin inflammations. In the case of varicose veins, it can reduce pain by reducing the inflammatory process.
Black evening primrose can also be used to care for sick, inflamed, but not bleeding skin – e.g. atopic eczema, psoriasis – in the form of an ointment or pack. In obstetrics, it can be used to soften perineal scars. Painful, hard muscle knots (myogelosis) also respond well to a pack made from black nightshade. The mucilage in the plant can store heat extremely effectively and then slowly release it in the treated area; this can further relieve symptoms.
Application: The cream is recommended to promote the absorption of bruises, hematomas, and as a supplement to treatments after bone fractures for skin care purposes. We recommend continuous use for a maximum of two weeks. The main active ingredient of black nightshade is allantoin, which also contains tannins, mucilage, and other alkaloids.
