Active ingredient of the wild plant of the South African savannas. The root contains iridoid glycosides (e.g. procumbide, harpagoside, harpagid), in addition to phytosterols, flavonoids, triterpenes and simple sugars. Presumably, the iridoid glycosides, most notably harpagoside, are responsible for the plant's anti-inflammatory effect, which the compounds achieve by inhibiting the lipoxygenase enzyme, reducing leukotriene formation and reducing TNF release, but they have no effect on the cyclooxygenase enzyme.
The analgesic effect of the extract is weaker than its anti-inflammatory activity, therefore its use is primarily recommended for chronic inflammation. The extract of devil's claw root can be used primarily for the adjunctive therapy of degenerative joint diseases.
