This thorny shrub, called Hippophae in Latin and belonging to the family of Silverweed, is most widespread in Asia, but some of its species are also native to Europe. The species Hippophae rhamnoides is the most widespread in the Carpathian Basin. The plant has a high light requirement, but it tolerates cold well and can survive on almost any soil, on rocks, in riverbeds, and even on sand dunes, hence its name. We can grow the thorny shrub, which usually grows to 3-5 meters and forms a dense thicket, in our own garden. We just have to pay attention to the fact that since it is dioecious, both female and male individuals must be planted when planting. It will only bear fruit from the third year, but it can live for up to 30-50 years.
